We want to make the playoffs and take a run at this, but at the same time we have to take care of the player first." Toews is likely three weeks away from returning from a sprained knee suffered Jan. 1. The worst part of missing games for Martin Lapointe is the nature of his injury - a bruised kidney. "I wish I had a broken finger or a bad knee or something," said Lapointe, who has missed the Blackhawks' last four games. "Those are things you can battle through, maybe, but with my situation you can't take any chances. You have to wait it out." - Chicago Tribune Nikolai Khabibulin returns in goal for the Hawks after backup Patrick Lalime started the last five games, winning the first four. The streak ended with a 3-2 loss Tuesday at San Jose that capped the Hawks' 2-1 road trip. - Chicago Sun Times .

In light of the recent controversy over rigged energy efficiency studies that have unfortunately been touted by so many in the press instead of SPEC, I thought I'd offer some more in-depth analysis on energy efficiency. The new SPECpower_ssj2008 benchmark gives us a standardized way of measuring energy efficiency for Server Side Java. SPECpower_ssj2008 gives us efficiency data at varying workloads going from 0% to 100% at increments of 10%.
Pimp C Is Given Uplifting, Heartfelt Farewell At Funeral
Oh Lord, don't play that! You're gonna make me cry," one lady yelled from her seat when the opening notes of the "One Day" rang out. For some, the beginning of the funeral was very somber: DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia sunk down in his seat in sorrow, and some women were crying before they even made it into the building. Once inside, though, words of hope and joy were spoken throughout the service. "We are here to celebrate not just this young man's leaving but a life well lived [and] all he's done all over the world," Port Arthur Mayor Deloris "Bobbie" Prince said at the podium during the service. Still, she even got choked up at points while talking about the bond Pimp had not just with his community, but with his family. She admitted that giving the speech was more difficult than she'd expected because "I'm a mother." Pimp's mom, Weslyn "Mama Wes" Monroe, spoke during the service as well, and appeared to be a pillar of strength.
Metropolit visits old stomping grounds
Boston Bruins centre Glen Metropolit took time on the weekend to skate on the same outdoor rink he used as a child in Toronto as a part of a segment taped for CBC television. "It was so much fun seeing all the kids," Metropolit told the Boston Herald. "We did an interview on the outdoor rink I grew up on. It was special seeing all the little kids out there with me. It totally reminded me of how it was when I was a kid. There was one puck out there, and everyone was just fighting for it. A little bit of snow was coming down, the ice was terrible. It was awesome. It brought back a lot of memories. "I haven't been skating there in many years, probably since I was about 16. They were all asking me questions, the same simple questions that I used to ask: 'How many sticks do you get? You gotta buy your own sticks? You get your name on your sticks?' It was special.
Yosemite in winter: The splendor without the crowds
As I tumble upward, everybody looking at me is somebody I've already seen elsewhere in the park. Hello again! I want to say, I'm about to break my wrist! As I land, I try to take solace in another bit of Yosemite winter wisdom, one shared by longtime park ranger Dick Ewart: "When people fall down in the summer, they swear. When people fall down in the winter, they laugh." Winter rhythms Yosemite winter days possess their own rhythm. Even the most routine national park activity -- the easy nature hike -- takes on the meditative pace of a pilgrimage. On our second morning, we follow a ranger through a snow-softened valley meadow, acquiring the requisite bits of natural history. In winter, Yosemite's bears do not hibernate, the ranger says.
Flattening QBs a key in NFC title game
A sack is like a bases-loaded double play or a blocked shot in the final seconds of a tight game. It's dynamic or deflating, depending on which side of the line a player makes his living. Whichever team gets the quarterback on the ground most often in Sunday's NFC championship game could be the one headed to the Super Bowl. And both the Giants and Packers excel at pressuring and punishing opposing passers, even if Brett Favre or Eli Manning gets his pass away. "I think a sack is a glorified stat," Green Bay defensive end Aaron Kampman said. "Trust me, we all try to get them. I try to get them. You know, it's a great thing. But in the end, if I, or anyone, can force an incompletion, can force a hurried throw that leads to an incompletion, a ball hit afterwards, all those things factor into the game.
Why Wordsworth outshines the web
When she received the Nobel Prize, Doris Lessing devoted her acceptance speech to an impassioned denunciation of the internet and all its ways. When great writers give us their views, they sometimes put aside their genius and mount the soapbox simply in their capacity as coeval of all the other silly old gits who have the same range of prejudices. So we thought, sadly, when old Kingsley Amis gave his post-luncheon views on the State of the Nation. But might Lessing be right? Any of us who have spent the last week in the company of children and young adults will have enjoyed moments of repose while they went off to absorb themselves in jokey Facebook messages or computer games. Lessing contrasted the rapturous scenes in poor African townships when she and her fellow progressives arrived more than half a century ago, with cargoes of books.
