GMA purging JdV allies in government

He said the House is going to start with an electronic voting system in February after a long Christmas break.

Calling it a collective legacy of the House of Representatives, de Venecia said that in the first week of February we will be among the leading parliaments in Asia using the electronic voting system.

De Venecia, yesterday, led senior House leaders in an ocular inspection of the plenary hall where work is being rushed to install all the components of the historic P15-million electronic voting system.

We are setting the example for the government and the nation, he said.

Beginning the first week of February, we will be among the leading parliaments in Asia using electronic voting, just like the parliaments of the European Union and the U.S. Congress, the Speaker announced.

Coca-Cola Co.

Cokes soda sales in the third quarter were the best since 2000 as a global marketing push behind its flagship products continued to pay off. The company's North American and noncarbonated-beverage sales remain a concern, however. See article.

Maple Leafs turning to Cliff Fletcher?

The person who needs to go in Leafland is Paul Maurice; he is a terrible coach and possibly the worst in the nhl. For all the ills of the franchise, and JFJ is responsible for a great many of them, the team he assembled, signed and resigned is not a last place group; they are middle of the pack at best, but certainly not as abysmal as their on-ice performance has indicated. Every long-term signing that JFJ could have been reasonably conceived as a good idea, McCabe for the long term, Kaberle, Tucker, Blake etc... should all be playing better, and that falls to the coach. Start by getting rid of him and you'll see an immediate turn-around, and once that happens, maybe the national over-emphasis on everything Toronto can subside for a while.

Stat Snapshot: Oscar Contenders Tank in Theaters

A glut of serious-minded Oscar contenders is crowding theaters with disastrous box-office results. The latest, most pronounced casualty, "Things We Lost in the Fire," a Paramount/Dreamworks project loaded with Academy Award honorees, combusted in its initial 1,142-theater rollout, earning just $1.6 million. The film was predicted to make twice that amount. (Read the Journal's review. ) While the film stars Oscar-winners Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro, neither actor has distinguished themselves as highly commercial dramatic talents.

But a marketplace filled with similar pictures is the most likely cause of the film's crash. Also opening wide over the weekend, New Line's political drama "Rendition" -- starring Oscar favorites Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon -- similarly bombed, with a weak $4.2 million in 2,250 theaters, while Focus Features' hit-and-run melodrama "Reservation Road" collected a feeble $36,821 from 14 theaters.

Bill Conlin: Blowing smoke across generations

PODS DRANK with my dad.

Bill Conlin Sr. never told me that. Pop was long gone when Johnny Podres told me about the years when he was a kid with the Dodgers and lived in the Hotel Bossert. He told me that he knew my dad when he lived there as a rookie and later, when he set free the Yankees-oppressed Borough of Brooklyn.

The Bossert was at the corner of Hicks and Montague streets, about two blocks from our apartment on Grace Court in Brooklyn Heights. I was between colleges in 1955 when Pods liberated several million worshipers of a team where "Wait 'Til Next Year" had gone from annual prayer to fervently chanted mantra.

The Brooklyn Dodgers' offices were on Montague Street, about a 10-minute walk from our apartment. My dad was a liquor salesman for Hiram Walker whose territory included the Murder Incorporated gin mills run by the mob in Red Hook.

Pierce's Koehlmoos Named Sports Fource Champion

Pierce, NE--In the biggest game of the season, Eric Koehlmoos did what all the best players do. DOMINATE! Showing he was the best player on the field, the Pierce Junior had not one, not two, not three, but four interceptions in a 39-10 win over number-3 Norfolk Catholic. He ran back two of the picks for touchdowns, which was more points than Norfolk Catholic scored in last Friday's game. "I never dreamed of four in one night," says Koehlmoos. "It's an awesome feeling going out there and doing that." "He's there to make big plays for us," adds lineman Josh Weber. "He's a pretty good leader." He definitely is. Koehlmoos added two more rushing touchdowns, giving him a 22 on the year in only six games. Even though he was an All-Stater as a sophomore, Friday's performance might have been his coming out party.

The DCC Just Hung Up On Me

People like US, the TAXPAYING Citizens of the United States are simply expected to donate to their cause while keeping our mouths shut... As soon as we OPEN our mouths, they become annoyed, tune us out, or throw us out of their offices...

This is the reason I am a Libertarian.. I know many people on this board think that my vote is wasted.. that I am not making a difference, but at the end of the day, what the big party wants, the big party gets, and your trying to change things from the inside is even more fruitless... The difference is that people who think they are making a difference while trying to enact change from within the party are ignoring the fact that our two major parties produce the best politicians MONEY CAN BUY.

Mike Huckabee and Your Gastronomic Business

Throughout his time in the public limelight, Republican Mike Huckabee has made obesity awareness one of his pet issues having lost over 100 pounds himself. However, as is typical of most fanatics having come to a realization or a cause a little later in the game than most, it is not enough for them to keep what they have learned to themselves but now they are out to impose their new way of life to such an extent that they are willing to appeal to the mechanisms of the state in order to enforce their vision of reality. .
