| Castro: I Thought I Was Going To Die
When I fell gravely ill the night of the 26th and dawn of the 27th of July, I thought that would be the end," the ailing 81-year-old wrote in an essay published on the front page of state newspapers. "And while the doctors fought for my life, the head aide of the Council of State read at my urging the text and I dictated the necessary arrangements," he wrote. Castro has not been seen in public since July 31, 2006, when his secretary Carlos Valenciaga read a statement on government television that emergency intestinal surgery was forcing the island's unchallenged leader since 1959 to cede power to a provisional government headed by his younger brother Raul. Though he stepped aside as president, Castro has retained his role as head of the island's supreme governing body, the Council of State.

Costello 'right' to shun leadership
The man will speak for himself, but I take the view that his decision is the right one not to run for leadership," Mr Kroger told ABC Radio today. "The one mistake all these state oppositions make is - one of the reasons they keep losing - is that they think they're the government in exile. "Once you lose an election, the first thing you have to work out is what policies you're going to keep ... and acknowledge that the electorate has told you they don't want you. "It is very important for an opposition not to look like the government in exile." Mr Kroger said it was impossible to say if the coalition would have won a fifth straight election on Saturday if outgoing prime minister John Howard had stood aside for Mr Costello. Costello campaign would have been different However, he said the entire election campaign would have been much different.

Winehouse reminds Boy George of himself
Boy George says Amy Winehouse reminds him of himself. The former Culture Club singer has long battled an addiction to cocaine, and realized he had a connection with the troubled star when she was recently taken to the same east London police station where he was held on charges of false imprisonment last May. George said, "I love Amy Winehouse. My favorite thing was seeing her going into Shoreditch police station (in connection to a bribery plot) because that's where I was nicked. It's obviously the pop star cop shop. .
