Slow blog day

Sorry for not posting more today. I left Little Rock early this morning to drive to Fayetteville to participate in a panel discussion about ... blogging. And Max is still out of town.

Just got back to the office and I hope to catch up quick.

And if you're driving, please be careful. It's treacherous out there.

That big splash at Mouton's second practice was not Omari Johnson, or ...

TUESDAY NIGHT, back from interim coach Kevin Mouton's second practice.

Sophomore Calvin Hampton called it, "ultra-intense.''

I would call it a friggin disaster.

I probably shouldn't even get into this, but the masthead does say, BEHIND THE BEAVERS BEAT so here is the back story to what happened this afternoon.

After watching 1 1/2 hours of the workout (open practices, baby! ... Mr. De Carolis, tear that wall down!) I surmised that Mouton and the guys were about ready to turn the gym over to LaVonda Wagner so I hustled upstairs to the little boys' room and made a quick pit stop before joining the media scrum.

Saints hire ex-Mississippi coach for defensive line

Before coaching at Mississippi, where he finished 10-25 in three seasons, Orgeron had been the defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator under Pete Carroll at USC. He'd also coached the defensive line for Miami under Jimmy Johnson. Orgeron helped develop Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp and Mike Patterson into first-round draft picks.

Bruce Feldman is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.

Neil Patrick Harris hits Mother-lode

Well, the former Doogie Howser, M.D. -- namely, 34-year-old actor Neil Patrick Harris -- will find himself in the company of a bevy of Victoria's Secret models tomorrow night on a new episode of How I Met Your Mother (CBS, E!).

Now, Doogie would have been too young to really appreciate this.

And in real life, Harris is gay, which obviously would negate the impact.

But as for Barney Stinson, who is Harris' character on How I Met Your Mother, this truly is a wet dream come true.

Or is it?

The episode is titled The Yips, and it has nothing to do with a golf game gone bad. As it turns out, infamous ladies-man Barney loses his sexual mojo just after receiving his invitation to an exclusive Victoria's Secret party.

Models making cameos tomorrow night include Heidi Klum, Marisa Miller, Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, Selita Ebanks and Alessandra Ambrosio.

Midlands joins in Atonement success

It was the world's first "user-generated" feature film, giving the MySpace social networking community a chance to contribute to every aspect of the film's production from online script-writing meetings and castings by webcam to forums for its trailer.

Clubbed by Formosa Films is an underworld drama set in the early 1980s about about a lonely factory worker whose life is transformed when he becomes a nightclub doorman.

This year, the region's growing popularity will be further demonstrated by Screen West Midlands' presence at a major international film event.

"Screen West Midlands as an agency will be representing the West Midlands at the Association of Film Commissioner International's UK pavilion in Santa Monica," Mr Badham added.

America votes, Bush wins, the world responds

Al–Qaida in Iraq have been escalating their operations in order to try to defeat the powerful call of democracy. Under Kerry, and in the wake of an upsurge in terrorism in Iraq, a precipitous withdrawal of American troops seemed possible. Under the president who initiated the new phase in Iraq’s history, it is not. Iraq will not be abandoned. Bush’s re–election confirms that it is the terrorists who will continue to be against the wall, and freedom that shall flourish.

There is one remaining, if relatively unimportant, source of joy in all this. That is the upset this result will cause among those, largely on the left, in Europe and elsewhere who are now so fantastically sidelined – the sinister fools who, after their communist idol fell, threw in their lot with the next opponent of freedom which came along.

Both Clinton and McCain scored hugely significant wins on Saturday in Nevada and South Carolina, wins which might set them on the road to the nomination.

Hillary is very likely to lose South Carolina because of the large black vote there. Had she lost Nevada too, she would have been badly handicapped going into Florida and Super Tuesday, having suffered two consecutive defeats. But now that she has won Nevada, she can lose South Carolina and still have momentum.

The run-up to South Carolina and the primary itself will feature constant focus on the African-American vote. Analysts and pundits will wonder if the wife of the “first black president" will lose to the real thing. She will. But, in a curious way, this will hurt Obama more than it will help him. It will create a racial subtext to a campaign that, until Iowa, didn't have one.

Presidential presence: Joe McDonald has headed Salish Kootenai College ...

Salish Kootenai College president Joe McDonald pauses during a tour of the 140-acre campus in Pablo recently. The college, which opened in a single building with fewer than 50 students, is celebrating its 30th year, with McDonald as its president for the past 28 years.
