Figueroa leads Crusaders in district win

If Catholic High's sophomore forward keeps playing the standout soccer that has helped propel the Crusaders to great success over the last two seasons, that college degree could become much cheaper.Behind a Figueroa score and two goals from Louis Hines, the Crusaders rolled over South Walton 4-0 in the District 1-3A semifinal at Gorecki-Lebeau Stadium Tuesday night and will play Walton for the district title on Thursday at 7 p.m.Making the move from Peru halfway through his eighth grade year, Figueroa wondered how his favorite sport would translate in America. Considering Figueroa's bloodlines in the sport his brother Gerado was a professional soccer player in Peru he hoped that soccer wouldn't be lost in the shuffle in his new home."I was kind of scared that soccer wouldn't be as challenging (as it was in Peru)," said Figueroa, who played for the Bayside Soccer Club under-16 travel team at age 14.

Sox face similar dilemma as Celts

Al Jefferson finally got over his injuries and put together the type of season that the Celtics had once dreamed of. The big forward averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds last season, and as he hit his stride after an early appendectomy, he finished with 38 double-doubles and established himself as a dominant force.

The Celtics had every expectation that the 21-year-old would blossom into a star, and when they acquired Ray Allen to complement both him and Paul Pierce, it was widely assumed that a top draft pick would give the Celtics a little something to hang their hat on for a change.

We all know what happened next: Director of Operations Danny Ainge had a chance to pick up the Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Garnett, a major star of the NBA. It would cost him a boatload of other players, but it would make his team an instant contender.

Todays Letters: French fry arrest was over the top

Maybe Officer Parco was just hungry and it made him a little cranky. I really hope the lawyers don't get involved, when a simple "I'm sorry" will do the trick.

Officer should get some manners

I have a million things to do today, but after reading this article regarding Jean Merola's experience at McDonald's with Clearwater police Officer Matthew Parco, I just had to sit down and write.

I know nothing more than what I read in the paper, but I think his behavior was totally out of order and totally inappropriate! I believe Mrs. Merola did exactly as she was told to do, so why was the police officer in such a hurry that he acted like a spoiled brat?

Even if she really had done something criminal, his behavior was inappropriate for a police officer.

Moon teacher fired amid sex allegations

MOON TWP. — The Moon Area School Board has fired a health and physical education teacher who admitted to having sex with a 14-year-old boy.Beth Ann Chester, 26, of 2034 Swallow Hill Road, Scott Township, was fired Monday from her teaching position as well as from extra-duty paid positions such as co-breakfast monitor, co-sophomore class sponsor and assistant volleyball coach, effective Monday. She had taught in the district for more than two years.Chester, who had submitted a resignation letter from those positions on Dec. 27, admitted to police she had a sexual relationship with the boy and sent him lewd text messages that included nude photographs.Although she had submitted her resignation, the school board — which had not met since her Jan. 4 arrest until last night — had not acted to accept it, keeping her on the district’s payroll until Monday.Instead, the board voted unanimously without discussion to fire Chester, who is charged with endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors, sexual abuse of children, unlawful contact with a minor, criminal use of a communication facility and criminal solicitation.According to the criminal complaint, Chester first contacted the student via text message with the results of a girl’s volleyball game in late October.Chester, who acquired the boy’s phone number from a girl on the volleyball team, continued to send him messages, while also occasionally writing him late excuses and hall passes to allow them to spend extra time together. The boy, who told police he was in love with Chester, denied the sexual contact and said the two talked about Chester’s relationship with her husband. But when police viewed the text messages, they found two nude photos of Chester, one nude photo of the boy and explicit messages. The communications ended Dec.

Troy Stradford Q&A

Former Dolphins running back Troy Stradford, the 1987 AFC Rookie of the Year, answers readers' questions in Sun-Sentinel.com's weekly Q&A sessions with former Dolphins. Below are Stradford's responses:

Q: Hey Troy, what would you do at the quarterback spot? Cleo Lemon has played pretty well, but isn't it time to get John Beck in there? Randy Metzger, Jersey City, NJ

A: "Randy, I would do exactly what Cam Cameron is doing at this time. I too am looking at a season that is all but over and would like to see a glimpse at the future in John Beck. However, Cleo Lemon deserves the opportunity to lead this team at this point. I'm sure the approach to getting Beck ready (sooner) is in progress after the injury to Trent Green and I'm expecting to see Beck around midseason."

EHS Director enjoying new role

My first focus is going to be to get some kids in here and to redo the children's section," Mottola said. "Edmond is so full of wonderful things to do and we need to be one of those stops families know about. ... If you get kids in here, you'll get the grown-ups in here. And then you get the buy-in of the younger generation to want to keep it going."Edmond has more to offer than fine dining experiences, she said. "That's not the important things in life," she said.Mottola compares Edmond to Lexington, Mass., a city with a culturally rich heritage marked by its beginning of setting some cultural cornerstones. For example, Edmond has preserved the legacy of Oklahoma Territory's first school house."It's important for us to know that we have history, too, and it doesn't just stop at the (89er) Land Run," she said.
