| Byas has overcome much to star for Beaufort
The bare stat line in South Carolina's annual North-South all-star game didn't seem fitting for Adrene Byas. Just a week after completing a season in which he rushed for a shade under 2,000 yards and scored 33 touchdowns, the Beaufort High School senior tailback never even touched the object that had given him so much hope. Without football, Byas admits that he probably would be out running streets, college wouldn't be an option and he might have never met his estranged father. .
Forbes again names Google as best place to work in U.S.
Google Inc. is the best U.S. company to work for, according to a Fortune magazine survey. Mountain View's Google, owner of the world's most popular Internet search engine, was the top-ranked employer for the second straight year, beating Internet home lender Quicken Loans Inc. and Wegmans Food Markets Inc., a northeastern U.S. grocery chain, Fortune said Tuesday. The magazine surveyed employees at 406 companies. Edward Jones & Co., the brokerage firm, ranks fourth, followed by South San Francisco's Genentech Inc., the world's second-biggest biotechnology company, and Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose, the largest maker of computer-networking equipment. Starbucks Corp., Qualcomm Inc., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Methodist Hospital System complete the top 10. Other Bay Area companies on the Fortune list are Network Appliance Inc.
Ventre: Suddenly, Lakers need the old Kobe
As soap operas in the NBA go, it was really tough to beat the Kobe-Shaq era. Most fans feel a little nostalgic for those venomous times, with their headlines and bit players and cliffhangers. In recent months, however, Kobe Bryant has done his part to liven up an otherwise tranquil Laker habitat. He blasted the organization last spring, demanding a trade. He ripped young Andrew Bynum to a couple of parking lot knuckleheads with a video camera. He quieted down, went back to work, and realized that the on-court help he was barking for was there after all — and Bynum was the most reliable and important example of that. So this latest melodrama has gone something like this: Kobe scores in deluges during the 2006-07 campaign because he doesn't trust his teammates, then he sees the error of his ways and sacrifices his shots and points so the entire team can prosper, and now Bynum goes out with a knee injury and Kobe scored a season-high 48 in his first outing without the big kid.

Yesterday the actor Heath Ledger, most famous for his Oscar-nominated role in "Brokeback Mountain," was found dead in his New York City apartment. He was just 28 years old.And of course we won't know what killed him until more tests come back... the autopsy was "inconclusive," but here's what we do know: Police are calling it a possible prescription drug overdose. No signs of foul play, and a bottle of sleeping pills reportedly found. No illegal narcotics found in the room, though. And here's what else we know: prescription drugs are the second most abused drug among teens after pot. Not cocaine, not meth, not heroin, legal drugs prescribed by medical professionals. So the police may be saying no signs of foul play in Heath Ledger's death, but I want to know, if he overdosed, what the names of the doctors on any little brown bottles found at the scene are.
Henry County mourns for fallen soldier
Jenkins ignored her pleas and enlisted in March 2006. Friends and family remember Jenkins as a born-again Christian with a larger-than-life sense of humor. "He was always so silly and he never wanted to see anybody down in the dumps," Billingsley said. "He'd just walk by you, 'Woo hoo, smile buddy!' " Jenkins went to Iraq in February, then came home for a couple of weeks before returning in mid-October. Jenkins is survived by three brothers, his sister and father. His mother died of a heart problem in 1997. "That body is not my brother's anymore," Billingsley said, glancing toward her brother's grave. "He's in God's army now." .
