'Untouchables Queen' eyes prime minister's post

In a sign of her influence, even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rang her up while on a trip to China to wish her happy birthday.

Her state win was the first time in nearly two decades a party has won an outright majority. That means she can stay in office for a full five-year term, giving her time and funds to propel her party onto the national stage.

One of nine children, Ms. Mayawati managed to study law and become a teacher through a government quota scheme for Dalits before being mentored by the BSP's founder.

Even her critics say she is a good administrator who has appointed technocrats to powerful posts and helped reduce crime.

"To understand her you have to understand she came from absolutely nothing. She really was a nobody," said Chandra.

Romney pins Republican campaign hopes on business experience

Thank you for your time and I love to watch Wolf Blitzer! I am 56 years old, so I have been around for some good and some bad, presidents. I think our government tries to take God out of everything, but He will be there, no matter what. Very truly yours, Ada L. Parcell

Metro says ridership was up 7% in 2007

The estimates will be finalized in March, but the agency believes it to be the biggest annual ridership gain in the past 10 years.

It had 365,000 boardings on an average weekday in 2007. The 110 million boardings do not include trips taken by passengers traveling in VanPools or ridership on Metro's Access services for people with disabilities.

According to the agency, VanPool programs also saw strong growth. VanPool ridership was about 2.3 million in 2007 -- up 18 percent from 2006. The newer VanShare program totaled 300,000 rides in 2007, a 39 percent increase for the year. The Access program continues to provide about 1.2 million trips annually.

Metro managers say high gas prices and strong employment historically have contributed to ridership gains.

SFGate: Oakland Athletics : The Drumbeat

In the last week, Kendall has started taking an uppercut again and pulling the ball. He got his first homer last night in Houston, and followed it up today with a double and the game-winning RBI single to left in the 11th. No Caddy, but maybe he's turning from a Pinto into a Mustang.

The last guy you'd expect the A's to sign is right-handed reliever Ruddy Lugo, who they claimed off waivers today. In May, Lugo struck out the side against the A's in the ninth and punctuated it with fist pumps (he was in some childish snit about Nick Swisher), drawing some "bush league" comments. The Devil Rays promptly sent him to the minors -- a 9.28 ERA didn't help either. But Lugo righted himself in AAA. Maybe he'll be worth getting pumped up about -- or at least not leave the A's looking red-faced.

THE TICKER: TV host and U-M grad Dana Jacobson pays for potty mouth

Nope, not him. Forget the likely suspects.

It was "First Take" co-host Dana Jacobson, who reportedly has been suspended a week. ESPN confirms only that she's being disciplined, but she wasn't on the ESPN2 show Wednesday morning.

Here's how the Press of Atlantic City described it:

" ... Jacobson made an absolute fool of herself, swilling vodka from a Belvedere bottle, mumbling along and cursing like a sailor as Mike & Mike rested their heads in their hands in embarrassment."

Jacobson, a Bloomfield Hills native and Michigan grad, reportedly dropped F-bombs on roastee Mike Golic's alma mater, Notre Dame -- with football coach Charlie Weis in the crowd.

Jacobson said Tuesday in a statement: "I am sorry. My remarks about Notre Dame were foolish and insensitive.

Howard linked to Wolves move

And if we did get promoted (which i detest talking about!) he would be unlikely to feature and we would have money to spend on players then anyway. So for 1.5m for this season if he bangs them in and shows our other misfirers where the goal is, than it makes sense to me!

So please wolves fans don't come on here moaning about the club buying has beens, as generally speaking we don't these days!!

tonymischi said: Dec 7th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

we really need a Marlon King or a H Bouazza big target man cause problems in the box, a player capable of doing the same in the premier, successfully against Fulham,Wigan Brummies etc. cause that's whats required. Steve Howard has some of those attributes but not all and as such i'd have to say does not fit the bill. Midfielder, we lack an Ince midfield experience general and on the pitch leader.

SNP criticises Alexander’s month of ‘self-imposed silence’

Labour's Holyrood leader Wendy Alexander was accused yesterday of going on a month-long "self-imposed silence" since the Electoral Commission began investigating an illegal donation to her leadership campaign.

The SNP's Roseanna Cunningham said that by Friday a full month would have passed without the Labour leader giving any interviews or answering any questions.
